In less than good condition, but sound aside from the mentioned faults. 43 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Porto was the first to have a funeral oration for Alexandre Herculano. This sermon explains Herculano's importance to Porto, where he landed with D. Pedro in 1832, and where his first works were published. The author reflects on his political and literary achievements.António Cândido Ribeiro da Costa (S. Faustino de Fridão, Amarante, 1850-Amarante, 1922), known as António Cândido, was a Portuguese politician and teacher who gained extraordinary fame as a parliamentary orator. He was called "A Águia do Marão". One of the "Vencidos da Vida" along with Eça de Queirós, Ramalho Ortigão, Oliveira Martins, Guerra Junqueiro, and others, he was elected deputy to the Cortes for the Partido Progressista in the legislatures of 1880-1881, 1884-1887 eand 1887-1889. In 1888 he left his party, returning in 1890. He favored decentralized administration and proportional representation, serving as Ministro do Reino, 1890-1891, helping to put down the 31 January 1891 Revolt. Nominated Peer of the Realm in 1891, he was elected president of the Câmara das Pares in 1905. One of his protégés was the artillery lieutenant Sidónio Pais. After the 1910 republican revolution he abandoned politics, writing for the monarchist press.
