Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 544 pages. Cover worn. Text tanned. In a novel full of poetry and mysterious settings, Hardy unfolds the story of his beautiful , suffering Tess with unforgettable tenderness and intensity. Ed itorial Reviews Review Novel by Thomas Hardy, first published se rially in bowdlerized form in the Graphic (July-December 1891) an d in its entirety in book form (three volumes) the same year. It was subtitled A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented because Hardy fel t that its heroine was a virtuous victim of a rigid Victorian mor al code. Now considered Hardy's masterwork, it departed from conv entional Victorian fiction in its focus on the rural lower class and in its open treatment of sexuality and religion. After her im poverished family learns of its noble lineage, naive Tess Durbeyf ield is sent to make an appeal to a nearby wealthy family who bea r the ancestral name d'Urberville. Tess is seduced by dissolute A lec d'Urberville and secretly bears a child, Sorrow, who dies in infancy. Later working as a dairymaid she meets and marries Angel Clare, an idealistic gentleman who rejects Tess after learning o f her past on their wedding night. Emotionally bereft and financi ally impoverished, Tess is trapped by necessity into giving in on ce again to d'Urberville, but she murders him when Angel returns. After a few days with Angel, Tess is arrested and executed. -- T he Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature About the Author T homas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840. In his writing, he immortal ized the site of his birth-Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorcheste r. Delicate as a child, he was taught at home by his mother befor e he attended grammar school. At sixteen, Hardy was apprenticed t o an architect, and for many years, architecture was his professi on; in his spare time, he pursued his first and last literary lov e, poetry. Finally convinced that he could earn his living as an author, he retired from architecture, married, and devoted himsel f to writing. An extremely productive novelist, Hardy published a n important book every year or two. In 1896, disturbed by the pub lic outcry over the unconventional subjects of his two greatest n ovels-Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure-he announced that he was giving up fiction and afterward produced only poetry . In later years, he received many honors. He died on January 11, 1928, and was buried in Poet's Corner, in Westminster Abbey. It was as a poet that he wished to be remembered, but today critics regard his novels as his most memorable contribution to English l iterature for their psychological insight, decisive delineation o f character, and profound presentation of tragedy.
