Alphabetical dictionary of the proper names used in Horace's works, divided into subject matters by myth, history and geography. In the 18th century Horace was a particular favourite classical author for writers, artists and landscape architects with his emphasis on the 'pleasing and the useful' ('utile dolce') - among these of particular note was the poet Alexander Pope. The theme was also promoted by the Jesuits, and was instrumental in many of the new ideas of the century relating to nature and the natural (ref. René Rapin 1621-87). The Jesuit Père Bertrand-Gabriel Fleuriau (1693-1773 produced this volume; it was intended to accompany a 2 volume portable edition of Horace's 'Works' translated by Père Sanadon, but as noted in the 'avertissement' this dictionary is entirely separate. In very good condition. Barbier I: 955.
