kart. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. ed. 99 S. : zahlr. Illustr. ; 27 cm; Sehr gutes Ex. - Englisch. // Darren Almond's six-channel video installation All Things Pass (2012, pp. 34-79) doesn't so much begin as wake up. A slow percussive rhythm is heard - the first evidence of a four-piece ensemble of Hindustani classical musicians whose ragas will converse, over the next half-hour, with the visuals - and we see shifting light on ancient stone. The stone forms the steps of Chand Baori, a spectacular ninth-century step well in the village of Abhaneri, Rajasthan, and the largest of its kind in all of India. Its 3,500 steps descend thirteen stories over a hundred feet, the design narrowing inward to the base, where water collects and phosphorescent green algae brightly coat its surface. The architecture is geometric, intricate - it required seventeen different solutions to the making of corners - and pleasingly piecemeal, with the upper part having been rebuilt as a palace in the eighteenth century by the Mughals. In effect, though, it is an inverted pyramid designed to collect and conserve the maximum amount of rainwater from the domed sky above. Almond's camera moves to that sky, to rainmaking clouds and the sun, then back to the well, tracking the geometric rise of it, then a diagonally angling moon - Chand Baori means 'moon' or 'silver' - and we have the first breakings of the systemic poetics of All Things Pass, its evocation of interlocked and paralleling schemas whose model might be the upturned pyramid itself, expansively wide at one end and narrow at the other. (Almond's lens, at various points in the video's run, will frame both the vast constellations winking in the night sky and the microscopic activity of insects.) As rain hits the steps, tablas patter empathically and we're reminded that the raga is a functional form that subdivides and marks the day (or the season), like the canonical hours or the muezzin call or, indeed, the numbered hours themselves. The group comprised players for tabla, the hundred-stringed santoor, flute and chimes. With Almond conducting as rough cuts of film played - the artist slowing and speeding their performances and moving through them with a gun microphone, emphasising different sonic areas in recording - they improvised on ragas written to represent rain, and also ones that represent the partition of the day into eight phases. Their music, then, is a cultural form that humans have evolved to mark a time cycle, the Earth passing around the sun, while the well is an architectural form that humans have evolved to survive India's yearly cycle of feverish monsoons and rainless heat. The piece settles in and develops, day and night and rainy and sunny seasons folding together, emphasising their continual alternation. As a more nuanced beat gets under way, dawn again breaks onscreen; soon after, we see the stars, with tiny pointillist dots of percussive sound suggesting a sonic equivalence. We're thus reminded, perhaps, of another long-term human endeavour: the search for persuasive visual equivalents to music, and vice versa - though Almond's interlacing might put one in mind more of the notion of musica universalis, the music of the spheres (S. 5) ISBN 9783935567633 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 750.
