Hardcover. Wide 16mo. Glazed pictorial paper over boards, pictorial card stock sleeves. (Each 24pp). Color illustrations. Near fine/near fine. First editions, tight and handsome, of these four volumes in the "Histoire sans paroles" ("Story without text") series of picture books. Unusual pictorial sleeves resemble a slipcase (with semicircular cutouts for easy book removal), except open at both ends. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from this publisher's children's book editor, 1p, 8¼" X 11½", Paris, France, 2006 January 6. Addressed to noted children's book author and artist Arthur Geisert. Fine. On "Editions Autrement" letterhead, it reads in part: "This series has been designed to open a creative space. It gathers stories made only with pictures, and invented and created by illustrators in their different styles of writing (graphics, narration). Each illustrator has his/her own way of telling stories, of developing characters throughout the book, and also of making unique use of the given space in the book. This collection aims to present a large range of styles and techniques (painting, engraving, drawing, etc.) and to show diversity and high quality of illustration. We would be so delighted if you could imagine a story that could take place in this series. We are sure that your innovative and individual style would produce funny, poetic, original or fascinating story. I sincerely hope that it will be possible for us to work together in the near future." Also present is an Autograph Note Signed from a Guillaume Guitton, heavy stock 8¼" X 4" "Editions Autrement" correspondence card, Paris, France, n.y. Fine. Transmits these four "Histoire sans paroles" titles. The editor's sales pitch worked, for in 2009 Geisert's book "Eau glacee" was published as part of this series.
