Softcover / Paperback. Condition: Fine. First edition. Paperback. Foreword by Hugh Mcllvanney. Athlete, activist, rebel, poet, legend Muhammad Ali stood larger than life in the imagination of hundreds of millions of people around the world. A gold medalist at the 1960 Olympics, he won the heavyweight championship at age twenty-two by conquering Sonny Liston in dramatic fashion. In the weeks after the upset victory, he confirmed his membership in the Nation of Islam and told reporters he would no longer answer to his "slave name": Cassius Clay. The political establishment stripped him of his heavyweight title when he refused induction into the United States Army during the height of the war in Vietnam. Ultimately, Ali returned to reclaim his crown, prevailing in epic fights against the likes of Joe Frazier and George Foreman. His talent and charisma and above all, his adherence to principle made him a cultural icon and one of the most beloved sporting figures of all time. But that is only half the tale. This is also the story of Ali, the man. The author got closer to Ali than any previous biographer. His work, told in Ali s own words and those of hundreds of family members, friends, rivals, and others who interacted with "The Greatest" over the decades, reveals a deeply spiritual, complex man, whose public and private battles, including his struggle against the devastating effects of Parkinson s disease, gave new meaning to the word courage and changed forever our conception of what makes a champion. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the legacy of one of the twentieth century s most charismatic and controversial superstars. Illus., Author's Epilogue, Appendix, Notes and Index. 544pp. p/back. F. with no creasing to covers.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Muhammad Ali s autobiography. Mint hardback. On the occasion of Muhammad Ali s visit to Great Britain, Ali s only signing (onto the special "London Visit" bookplate pasted onto title page) was at the Chancery Lane WH Smith bookshop, where he patiently signed about a hundred copies in an hour, (it was 1992 so by this time for the London visit the 5th printing) then at 2pm sharply the signing stopped. The influx was controlled by Smith s, as Ali already by this time at Parkinson s. I was standing on line for about an hour and a half before he arrived. He sat there looking as magically beautiful as always. His looks inseparable from his courage in becoming a Muslim, after which he had his championship title "revoked" by the U.S. Government, as was his passport all that "personal choice and freedom" only lasts till you choose to invoke its use. After signing and drawing a flower on the Warhol poster of himself that I handed him, he gestured holding forward his right arm to shake hands, which we did an unforgettable (meta)physical memory. Pristine condition.

Illustrated with numerous historic black & white photographs. Original publication date 1996. Includes extra unattached bookplate for your own personalization. From the Preface- "This book is not an attempt to mythologize Ali. It's an effort to show him as he was and is: a superb human being with good qualities and flaws. In his twenties, he was arguably the greatest fighter of all time. But more importantly, he reflected and shaped the social and political currents of the age in which he reigned. Ali in the 1960s stood for the proposition that principles mattered, that equality among people was just and proper, that the war in Vietnam was wrong." Ali was the first man to win the heavyweight title three times and he revolutionized the sport of heavyweight boxing. In 1990, Muhammad Ali was introduced into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Widely regarded as one, if not THE, best heavyweight fighters who ever lived, Ali's biography is an important book signed by an important world figure. As Cassius Clay, Ali won the light heavyweight gold medal at the 1960 Olympics and began the road to a highly successful heavyweight career. In 1964, Ali surprised the world by beating Sonny Liston and after the fight he changed his name to Ali after adopting Islam. Ali's title was stripped from him in 1967 when Ali refused the draft but he regained it, eventually, in 1974 by beating George Foreman. Ali successfully defended his title several times until the early 80's when his career was over. Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed "the Greatest", he is regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century and is often regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He held the Ring magazine heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970. He was the undisputed champion from 1974 to 1978 and the WBA and Ring heavyweight champion from 1978 to 1979. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he began training as an amateur boxer at age 12. At 18, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics and turned professional later that year. He converted to Islam after 1961. He won the world heavyweight championship, defeating Sonny Liston in a major upset on February 25, 1964, at age 22. During that year, he denounced his birth name as a "slave name" and formally changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1966, Ali refused to be drafted into the military owing to his religious beliefs and ethical opposition to the Vietnam War and was found guilty of draft evasion and stripped of his boxing titles. He stayed out of prison while appealing the decision to the Supreme Court, where his conviction was overturned in 1971. He did not fight for nearly four years and lost a period of peak performance as an athlete. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War made him an icon for the larger counterculture of the 1960s generation, and he was a very high-profile figure of racial pride for African Americans during the civil rights movement and throughout his career. As a Muslim, Ali was initially affiliated with Elijah Muhammad's Nation of Islam (NOI). He later disavowed the NOI, adhering to Sunni Islam. Signed by Author(s).
