Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Editions. vii, 428 pp; viii, 362 pp. Original cloth. Signature of former owner (Robert A. Fenn) on flyleaf of 1926 volume, else a Near Fine 'set', in near fine dust jackets (scarce for the 1926 volume, especially in this condition). 'This volume comprises the written Memoranda and Oral Evidence prepared by Alfred Marshall at different times for Government Departments and official enquiries. The Controller of H.M. Stationery Office has accorded permission for the reprint of the passages in question from the various Parliamentary Papers, to which more particular reference is made at the commencement of each extract. Generally speaking, the Memoranda and Minutes of Evidence have been printed in extenso and without modification. A few misprints have been corrected, some passages from the Memoranda repeated in the Minutes of Evidence have been omitted, and a verbal change has been made in accordance with Marshall's known wishes. This volume contains the whole of Alfred Marshall's contributions to official enquiries on economic questions with the exception of his work on the Labour Commission. Since he was a member of this Commission, and not a witness, it has been impossible in this case to identify or separate his contributions from those of the Commissioners as a whole' (from the Preface to the 1926 volume by John Maynard Keynes). Contents: I. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ON THE SUBJECT OF CURRENCY AND PRICES CIRCULATED BY THE ROYAL COMMISSION ON THE DEPRESSION OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY (1886). II. MEMORANDA AND EVIDENCE BEFORE THE GOLD AND SILVER COMMISSION (1887). III. PRELIMINARY STATEMENT AND EVIDENCE BEFORE THE ROYAL COMMISSION ON THE AGED POOR (1893). IV. EVIDENCE BEFORE THE INDIAN CURRENCY COMMITTEE (1899). V. MEMORANDUM ON THE CLASSIFICATION AND INCIDENCE OF IMPERIAL AND LOCAL TAXES. VI. MEMORANDUM ON THE FISCAL POLICY OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE (1903). '[The Supplement volume] constitutes a supplement to the 1926 account of Alfred Marshall's Official Papers edited by John Maynard Keynes. This book presents material which Keynes did not include, editorial notes and introductions to the various pieces. It focuses on the advice that Marshall, a founding father of modern economics, offered to the British government in the late nineteenth century. The topics covered include education, the role of women, trade unions, unemployment, public enterprise, the quantity theory of money, inflation and trade, benefits of free trade and dangers of protection. The material offers valuable insights into policy thinking a century ago, much of which has a surprising degree of relevance to the pressing policy issues at the end of the present century. The contents facilitates understanding this doyen of British economics and founder of the Cambridge School of Economics' (Cambridge University Press Web site). Contents: General introduction; Item 1: Evidence to the committee appointed to enquire into the condition of intermediate and higher education in Wales and Monmouthshire by Alfred Marshall - 20 December 1880; Item 2: Gold and silver commission, note by Professor Marshall on Professor Nicolson's paper 'On the effect of a fall in the gold price of silver and general gold prices' - 30 June 1888; Item 3: Material associated with Marshall's work for the Royal Commission on Labour 1891-1894; Item 4: The fiscal problem, August 1903.

'[T]he present volume contains a chapter on Trade Unions, to which there is no counterpart in the Principles [1890] . . . Marshall's contributions to the development of economics in a shape designedly intended for the instruction of 'junior students' may serve as a fitting occasion to emphasise the educational superiority, which his presentation of the subject seems to enjoy over that of many, if not most, of his contemporaries, and predecessors, in the possession of a pervading sense of unity' (L. L. Price, review for The Economic Journal, Vol. 2, No. 6, June, 1892, pp. 316-320).
