Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Thus. In 1832, John Mackay Wilson, Editor of the Berwick Advertiser, began publishing local stories, and by 1834 he published the first collection as 'Wilsons Tales of the Borders, and of Scotland.' a venture which became phenomenally successful, probably leading to his early demise in 1835. The weekly Tales were continued after JMW's death by his widow and new editors for a further 5 years. This copy is from a collection of twenty four volumes published from 1887 onwards. Bound in uniform green / brown cloth with bright gilt titling to the spine and black and red titling and decoration to the upper board. There is some bumping to the extremities but is otherwise very good plus. These volumes were revised by Alexander Leighton, one of the original editors and contributor. They were published by Walter Scott Publisher of Paternoster Road, London. In 1882 Sir Walter Scott acquired The Tyne Publishing Co., a printing and publishing business that was facing impending bankruptcy. Within a few years Scott, trading as the Walter Scott Publishing Co. Ltd. Was successfully publishing contemporary titles in classic series. This is volume 4, it includes (The Solitary of the Cave; The Maiden Feast of Cairnkibbie; The Professor's Tales (Early Recollections of a Son of the Hills; The Suicide's Grave); The Salmon-FIsher of Udoll; The Lindon Lairds, or Exclusives and Inclusives; Bon Gualtier's Tales (Country Quarters); The Monk of St. Anthony; The Story of Clara Douglas; The Fair; The Slave; The Katheran; The Monks of Dryburgh) Ref JJJ 3.
