Seller: Yesterday's Muse, ABAA, ILAB, IOBA, Webster, NY, U.S.A.
Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Hinges weakening, boards rubbed with portion of front cover paste-down lost, ink name and date ('Dora E. Covey, Christmas 1884') on front endpaper. 206 pp. Tall 8vo. A collection of short stories and poems released in the late 19th century. Includes several contributions by Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women) and other popular authors of the time, with engravings throughout. It is interesting to note here that the use of the term 'Chatterbox' was somewhat contested in the 19th century. Chatterbox was a long-running British weekly children's magazine written to appeal to both boys and girls at a time when most children?s magazines targeted schoolboys as their primary readers. The publishing firm Estes and Lauriat obtained the rights to reproduce and sell these works in the United States, and issued injunctions against several companies violating what it claimed was its 'exclusive right' to use the term. Belford, Clarke was among the publishers targeted by these injunctions, as was Frank Leslie (most famous for his folio size publications of engravings depicting the Civil War).
