Publisher's teal blue fine zig-zag patterned cloth panelled in blind, spines lettered gilt; spines gently faded to an olive hue. The fourth edition of this standard work on the natural history of British birds, with Volumes I-II with revised and enlarged by Alfred Newton and Volumes III-IV revised and enlarged by Howard Saunders. Upon its initial publication ([1837]-1843), "A History of British Birds" became the standard illustrated textbook for ornithology. "The value of [Yarrell's] works and the admiration which they still evoke may be said to be due to the accuracy of the information they contain together with the simplicity of their style and the charm and fidelity of the illustrations" (Mullens and Swann). "Yarrell lived in London and was an all-around naturalist, also being known for his proficiency as an angler and shooter. He was elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society and was one of the original members of the Zoological Society of London He made many important contributions to ornithology [and] was the first person to describe Bewick's Swan, distinguishing it from the Whooper Swan. Spines faded but a very nice set. The two matching volumes are fully bound in contemporary dark green calf with gilt and blind-stamped borders to upper and lower boards; four raised bands with spine titles in gilt. Volume two has had one preliminary page excised and the head of the spine is slightly rubbed with a one-inch split. It also bears an inscription, dated June 3rd 1843, noting a story in the Bristol Mirror concerning ".the largest salmon caught in the Severn for these last fifty years." It was during this visit that he accumulated his collection of objects from the region which were acquired by the British Museum in 1831.
