Early reprint (first published September 1911). xiv, 273 pages. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 18.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth; front board decorated with rubbed color pictorial paste-on; cloth worn at spine ends and board corners; staining to rear board with some slight rippling to cloth. Toned top edge; deckle fore-edge. Pictorial endpapers; color pictorial title page; nine color plates present within text precisely as called for on Illustrations list on page xiii. Splatter staining to pages 2-3; light moisture staining affecting top gutter corners of rear leaves; a few scattered spots of soiling and foxing to interior pages. Slender tearing to surface paper at rear hinge; several stress points to binding but otherwise holding. A good copy of a popular version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel embellished with the wonderful illustrations of the iconic N.C. Wyeth.

Endpapers are maps of The Great Highway Route of the Silk. Red cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Very minor wear to extremities, spine gilt ever so slightly dulled, cloth clean, cover gilt bright, gift inscription, frontispiece fine, else very good to near fine. No dust jacket. Samuel Merwin [1874-1936] was born in Evanston, Illinois and educated at Northwestern University. From 1905 to 1911, Merwin worked as Associate Editor, then Editor of the magazine SUCCESS. His knowledge of China came from a period there in 1907 when he was sent out by the magazine to investigate the opium trade. He was the author of many books. The frontispiece by N.C. Wyeth depicts an egyptianized scene of a king and queen with several retainers and bears the caption, "Before me sat the virgin queen", a line found on p. 58 of the narrative.
