Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Possibly the first publication of the Qatar National Museum. Untitled brown cloth in illustrated brown and gold jacket 23x27cm. (39)pp illustrated in b/w throughout, with royal portrait, photos, maps, plans and drawings. Covers and interiors good with archival tape reinforcements to several gutters. Jacket near fine. Scarce, with Worldcat and Library Hub identifying 14 locations. The Qatar National Museum opened in 1975 in a building that incorporated the Old Amiri Palace, which places this amongst its earliest if not the earliest published work, with the text apparently prepared in the lead up to its opening. Architect and archaeologist George Roy Haslam Wright (1924-2014) at this time at the Institut Francais d'Archeologie in Beirut, had been advising on the Palace's restoration. The Palace was originally been built by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani at the end of the 19th Century in Salatah, a little outside Doha, with easy access to the sea. It was a family residence where he also ran the affairs of Doha and its provinces, and liaised with the Ottomans, who had expanded into Eastern Arabia in 1871, designating Qatar a province of Nejd in 1872. After the Ottomans renounced sovereignty (1913) and with a trucial arrangement signed with the British (1916), Sheikh Abdullah no longer needed to be based here. In 1923 he left the Palace, and moved to the abandoned Ottoman fort of Qalat al-Askar. Wright's report includes a historical background, detailed description of the building, its architecture, and restoration. The palace was developed over time, and a map shows the direction of architectural influences upon it, including Turkish, Mongol, Persian, Anglo-Indian, and English. This is accompanied by numerous detailed site plans and elevations, aerial photographs, photos of details and the state of decay prior to restoration, and post-restoration. Although its function has changed, Wright's guiding principle was "to conserve and recreate as far as possible the spirit of the original construction". As its proximity to the sea had been affected by land reclamation, the plan included a pool roughly simulating the old shoreline to display traditional vessels, and a pavilion at the landing to house a maritime museum.
