VG orig. brown cloth in lt. edgeworn, price-clipped azure dj. [10], 204 p.; front. (port. of Ta Ssu Ming, attributed to Chao Meng-fu); 21.5 cm. [Photographically enlarged from 1957 edition] From the Foreword: `The study is divided into four parts. The first explains a fact which some translators have concealed from their readers: that neither they nor anyone else can be sure what Lao Tzu was talking about. Part Two explains what I think he was talking about. Part Three takes up the vast and curious movement which claimed him as its founder. Part Four tests his teachings on the problems of today. The third part--on the Taoist movement--must be read with caution. The subject is infinitely complicated; the information is difficult to get at; and mistakes are easy to make. No Sinologist in his right mind would attempt to do what I have done: none has. There is, in fact, no book to which the public can turn for a satisfactory summary of the Taoist movement in all its major aspects. The summary I give, therefore, reflects a real need. My hope is that, after a friendly laugh all around, the gaps and errors it contains will provoke correction and perhaps a better history of Taoism from those who are competent to write it.'. 1st British edition. Binding is Hardcover.

Taiwanese reprint. Endpaper maps, somewhat blurred black and white plates typical of reprints such as this from photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, vi + 385pp, appendices, notes, bibliography, glossary-index, some light foxing, card covers. This work examines the consequences of modernisation on Chinese Buddhism. The author offers an account of the careers of "recent Buddhist leaders and the diverse organisations they started."
