A monograph on what is essentially French wall paper manufactured by Joseph Dufour & Cie in 1805. The woodcut and gouache panels comprise twenty scenes in one vast panorama. The images, drawn by Jean-Gabriel Charvet, are from accounts of European voyages to the Pacific undertaken in the late eighteenth century by French and British explorers. The Tahitian-inspired landscape is populated by native people from various Pacific islands, shown in their distinctive costumes. Also with essay on the contemporary manufacture of French wallpapers. With a translation of Dufour's prospectus explaining that the peaceful, idyllic scenes were intended "to reveal the natural bonds of taste and enjoyment that exist between all men." First edition. 27 cm; 48 pp.; illustrated from photographs and drawings. A very good copy or better in self-wrappers illustrated with the complete panorama.
