First published in Sweden in 1964, "an unusual, ironic novel of power politics" set in a northern country corrupted by a publishing empire. Wahlöö was co-author with Maj Sjöwall of the "Martin Beck" detective novels 1965-1975, which have been cited as the origin of Nordic Noir. In one of his last works, the great dust jacket artist George Salter uses a jittery pen to stack magazines as an unstable office tower. This title is notably absent from Classic Book Jackets The Design Legacy of George Salter by Thomas S. Hansen (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005). Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
