Ink signature on title page. Arthur Pendarves Vivian was a frequent traveller and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He first published Wanderings in the Western Land in 1879, describing his travels in North America, starting in 1877 from St Johns, Newfoundland. Here he recounts his encounters with ferocious bears, study of geology, encounters with Indians, the Yosemité Valley, Comstock mining, etc. Some illustrations from sketches by the painter Albert Bierstadt, known for his sweeping landscapes of the American West.

With illustrations from original sketches by Mr. Albert Bierstadt and the author. Presentation from the author (without a signature) on the first blank page to Frederick DuCane Godman (1834-1919) an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist, "F. Godman, from an old friend, the Author, June 24, 1905." Frederick DuCane Godman was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. He closely studied the fauna and flora of Central America and had several plants name after him, he also collected Iznik, Hispano-Moresque and early Iranian pottery. He corresponded with other scientists of his time including Charles Darwin and lived at South Lodge, Lower Beeding where his ceramics collection was kept. Very slight rubbing at spine and very slight nick at head of spine with slight foxing to preliminaries, otherwise very good indeed. Excellent condition. Signedes.
