Benjamin Cummings Truman (1835-1916), born in Rhode Island, had a career as a journalist and worked on the staff of President Andrew Johnson before being sent to California as a special Post Office agent (1866-69), where he founded many new post offices and reestablished the Butterfield mail route. He returned to journalism as a correspondent for the New York Times and the San Francisco Bulletin, eventually becoming owner of Los Angeles Star. He next became a press agent for the Southern Pacific, and editor of its journal, The Wave. He authored several books including The Field of Honor, The Life, Adventures, and Capture of Tiburcio Vasquez, and Occidental Sketches.
