Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. G+. Hardcover. Blue paper pastedowns front and back, formatted so as to reveal underlying gray cloth near and at the spine. Significant overall rubbing and wear, including to edges and corners, with some loss to upper front panel near title. Spine has some staining, but title is still clearly legible. Front hinge is half separated; back hinge is heading in the same direction. No pages are loose, but hinges will need some attention. Some toning throughout due to use of war standards paper, but pages remain clearly legible. Ffep bears name, the year 1945, and the specification "Capt. SnC" -- was this copy owned by a local fishing boat captain? No other marks. A well-thumbed but still eminently useful volume. Illustrated profusely with B/W drawings by Gordon Chun and Y. Oda (not, presumably, Yoda biding his time) and eight color plates, the sixth of which also appears as the illustration on the front board. 404 pp. including index.

The descriptions include both the common and scientific names of each shell, its size and color, and its distribution through the Indo-Pacific area. The shells selected for inclusion are primarily those found in Hawaiian waters and in the areas to the south and west, including Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, the East Indies, and the Philippines. Many of them, however, are found throughout various parts of the Pacific and Indian oceans. Rutland, Vermont & Tokya.
