First Edition
First Edition. First Edition. large quarto, original grey cloth stamped in gilt on spine, in pictorial dust jacket. (208)pp. Upton & Sons, Vol. 7 in the Battle of the Little Big Horn Series. The newspaper, "Winners of the West" was published monthly and for a while bi-monthly from December 1923 through January 1944 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Its main purpose was to organize the Veterans of Indian Wars into an association to fight for the pension concerns of the veterans and their widows. It, however, did much, much more. It gave a voice to the soldiers who fought on the frontier - the men who made it safe for pioneers to build homes and lives in the West. The stories related in this newspaper include Indian Wars before and after the Civil War, stories from Florida to California and every place in between. Their stories that include George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh Cavalry during their time in the West are the ones we are concerned with in this work. Includes: front endpapers - DECLARATION FOR SURVIVOR'S PENSION and DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S PENSION - INDIAN WARS; back endpapers - 6 OPEN AIR CONCERT PROGRAMS, FORT CUSTER, MONTANA, SECOND U. S. CAVALRY BAND; 207 pages, illustrated dust-jacket of THE CUSTER FIGHT, ca, 1015 by artist William Herbert Duntan (1878 - 1936); frontis: typical "Winners of the West" front page; 27 illustrations; poem entitled â Winners of the West'; introduction; stories from the Indian War veterans that tell of Curley, Indian Scout; Thinks the horse Comanche only survivor of the Custer Battle; the Custer Battlefield today (December 1924); History of Indian Wars, Campaign Against Kiowas, Comanches, and Cheyennes in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Indian Territory and New Mexico, 1874 - 75; An Old Trooper of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Thinks he is Only Survivor of the Troop; Helped to Clean Up Chief Black Kettle and Rescue Two White Girls; and much, much more from the memories of Indian War Veterans.
