[exhibition held in the Town Hall, Melbourne, opened October 16th, 1939] ; organizer of exhibition, Basil Burdett ; [exhibition brought to Melbourne by the Herald]. Adelaide : Advertiser, 1939. Octavo, printed wrappers, 19 pp, illustrated with black and white photographic plates. (This exhibition was also presented in Adelaide by the Advertiser in September ?1939, and in Sydney by the Daily telegraph in November 1939). A very good copy. Exhibition catalogue including paintings and sculpture by Braque, Cezanne, de Chirico, Chagall, Derain, Dufy, Ernst, Matisse, Gauguin, Gris, Leger, Modigliani, Picasso, Redon, Rouault, Seurat, Soutine, de Vlaminck, Van Gogh, Pasmore, Gore, John, Sickert and Epstein. This was the most important collection of artwork ever to be brought to Australia: it would simply not be possible to mount such a touring exhibition today. This event included 9 paintings by Picasso, 8 by Matisse, 8 by Van Gogh, 8 by Gauguin and 7 by Cezanne - merely the tip of the iceberg! Because of the outbreak of the Second World War, all the works in the exhibition were forced to remain in Melbourne until 1945.The fascinating story of the exhibition is told by Eileen Chanin and Steven Miller in Degenerates and perverts (Melbourne : Miegunyah Press, 2005), the title of which is derived from a derogatory remark about modern artists made by the ultra-conservative J.S. McDonald, then director of the National Gallery of Victoria, who refused to host the exhibition at the NGV.
