Author's grandfather, caught in the Chicago fire of 1871, lost the house he had secured for his wife and seven children arriving from London. This is the story of that first Chicago year as seen through the eyes of the oldest daughter, Annie Sarah Rowland, 13. Father is excited about the new land, but it takes awhile for the rest of the family to catch his enthusiasm. Author and illus are both neices of the heroine, Annie - who is 100 when this book is published. Genuine and treasurable Americana for 10-14 year olds.
