Condition: Good. Color aquatint. Sheet 33 x 39cm. Mounted on a support sheet. Central text beneath the image missing part of title and publisher's imprint.Walpole Library, Yale: In the center of a book-lined room the bookseller, with a pen behind his ear, his hands in his pockets, glasses pushed to the top of his head, stands looking down disdainfully at a manuscript being offered to him by a thin, timid looking man who stands nervously with his hat tucked under his arm. A clergyman with spectacles, his back to the two other gentlemen, perusing the shelves, stops to examine a volume. In the left foreground on the floor, in front of a library step stool, is a pile of books. Another pile of books lies in the right foreground in front of a door with a glass panel and curtains in the top half. To the left of the door is a sloping writing table with paper, ink stand, and pen. From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.

First Edition
Full Morocco. Condition: Near Fine. Unifying the two works, besides the common theme and the fact that the second work, Real Life, was in an imitation and knock off of the first work, is that they share a common, quite decorative, full red morocco binding by Wood of London. Bindings with gilt decorative devices in four of six spine compartments, and board corners, front and back -- horse's head, cocktail glasses, boxing gloves, crossed swords. Two devices on leather corners of inside boards. 8vo. The two works have slightly different dimensions. Life is 233 by 148 mm, Real Life, 225 by 148 mm. 36 and 32 hand-colored plates in the two works respectively, for a total of 68 hand-colored plates. The three volumes have a somewhat complicated origin, as evident in the edition enumeration or identification, with the Real Life being a mixed state. We know the second volume is the fourth edition from its description in the publisher's advertisement. Condition: typical wear along joints. Some minor gradation of leather color, with spines slightly darkern. (We do not think there has been sunning.) Occasional light foxing or soiling, but the set overall reads clean. A beautiful, tight set. Life: First Edition, Second Issue. Real Life, Vol. 1, First Edition, First Issue. Vol. 2: First Edition, Fourth Issue.
