Gestempeltes Bibl.-Exemplar). 22x15 cm * Hendrik Willem Bakhuis Roozeboom, genannt Bakhuis Rozeboom, (* 24. Oktober 1854 in Alkmaar; 8. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ROOZEBOOM, H.W. BAKHUIS (1854-1907). Leiden: D. Donner, 1884. FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Orig. printed wrappers. (2), 24 pp. A bit of age wear; a good to very good copy. The Dutch physical chemist, H.W.B. Roozeboom, ".received a doctorate in 1884 with a dissertation on the hydrates of sulfur dioxide, chlorine, bromine, and hydrogen chloride; in it he studied the relationship among the three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) at different temperatures and pressures." (D.S.B.). This thesis was the beginning of his important work on the phase rule and heterogeneous equilibria. "He became the founder of the scientific doctrine of heterogeneous equilibriums, important not only in theoretical chemistry but also for its practical applications in metallurgy and geology. .In 1896 Roozeboom succeeded van't Hoff as professor of general chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, where he remained for the rest of his life." (D.S.B.). Partington IV. 638-639.

Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, part 1 bound in matching contemporary 1/4-leather & marbled boards. Vol. 2, parts 2 and 3, and Vols. 3, Parts 1 and 2, bound together in contemporary cloth. First Edition. Roozeboom wrote Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, part 1. Vol. 2, part 2, by E. H. Buechner; Vol. 2, part 3, by A. H. W. Aten; Vol. 3, parts 1 and 2, by F. A. H. Schreinemakers. "Roozeboom's importance in science stems from his application of the then little-known phase rule to the study of heterogeneous equilibrium. In volume I of Die heterogenen Gleichgewichte. (1901) one-component heterogeneous equilibrium systems were systematically treated. In volume II, part 1 (1904), Roozeboom treated two-component systems that contain only one liquid phase. After his death [in 1907] the work was completed by his pupils. W. D. Bancroft described Roozeboom as having done 'far more than any one else to show the importance and significance of Gibbs's Phase Rule'" (D.S.B. 11: 534-35).
