London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, New York: MacMillan and Company, 1893. 8vo, xii, 212, [2]pp., plus 7pp. (independently paginated) of advertisements at back, frontispiece and 5 plates. Original green cloth, boards and backstrip elaborately decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed; illustrated by means of original engravings by C. S. Ricketts, with the exception of plate no. 6, which is a bookplate, designed and engraved by William Bell Scott as a gift to the writer; frontispiece and plates with tissue guards. Sale notice inscribed on front free endpaper, bumping to top and bottom of backstrip, slight bumping to corners, uniform browning. Very good. § Reprint of the first edition, issued in the same year. Beautifully decorated in gilt, this binding was designed by C. S. Ricketts, and contains engravings set into plates, each of them with the tissue guard. Ricketts was a well known artist in the Art Nouveau movement. As Hofstätter states, "The style of his illustrations was initially associated with the Italian renaissance art of book production and included vigorously contoured human figures and an emphatic distinction between light and shade" (p. 68). Ricketts established the Vale Press in 1896, and was a member of the Royal Academy. From The Turn of a Century 1885-1910 (1970): "Unlike Beardsley, who saw his art in terms of isolated illustrations to be inserted between the text pages of a book, Ricketts conceived the book from inside out as the harmonious interplay of page, text, illustration, ornament and binding" (p.3); A Collection of Books Designed by Charles Ricketts (1972), 14.
