Book
Soft Covers. Condition: VG +. No Jacket. Photos (illustrator). 1st. The author is a well-established Australian writer on maritime history in the Australasian region and in this work the main coverage relates to the troop convoys assembled by the two countries in both world wars, with the opening chapters devoted to the Sudan campaign, which in 1885 involved the first overseas deployment of Aussie troops. This is followed by the transport of soldiers from both countries to South Africa for the Boer War. The conflicts in Korea and Vietnam round off the story. In both world wars large combined convoys were used to take troops from Aust and NZ to the Middle East, also with operations by both in the Pacific. Peter Plowman details the merchant ships participating in the major convoys and these included many of the famous liners of the time, some well known from the trans-Atlantic services. Naval craft providing the escort are also covered. The author has assembled photographs of most of the ships seconded to troop transport work and also the naval ships that protected them --- the most notable being the WWI encounter between the cruiser HMAS Sytdney and the smaller German cruiser SMS Emden. Having taken the troops overseas, often the same ships were employed in returning them top their homeland, during or after hostilities. Peter Plowman's "Across the Sea to War" is an important and valuable addition to the literature of sea warfare, covering an aspect most often mentioned only in passing in Australian and NZ military/naval histories. First edition of 2003, 504 pages including an appendix listing major convoys of WWII, plus bibliography and three indices covering merchant ships, naval ships and military units. illustratted throughout with b/w ship photographs. Art/pictorial card covers are VG+ with slight damage to front corners, internally NF, no inscriptions. Unpacked weight nearly 900grams; could require additiional postage for international delivery.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Photos, ship lists, tables etc (illustrator). Noted Australasian maritime historian Peter Plowman. in this work.has produced probably the first comprehensive account of early WW1 Australian and New Zealand troop movements. It was soon decided that ships from both nations extended to one fleet off West Australia, then sailing to The Middle East. His book is not just about ship movements but also of activities involved in gathering the ships (and escorts) to including impressions formed by those on the voyage His graphic coverage concludes at the withdrawal of troops from Gallipoli. but recalls related naval actions such as HMAS Sydney's battle with German light cruiser Emden off the Cocus Islands and that ships's previous string of sunk or captured Allied ships in the Indian Ocean. Plowman' book will appeal to maritime history enthusiasts and to those with a more naval bent. Obtaining, quickly, the ships required for the convoys to the Middle East provides a fascinating, seldom considered, example of the book's wide-ranging interest spectrum. This copy a little used public library item. Library markings confined to front cover, spine base. two stamps/small, label lower right corner half-title. Double title pages carry colour art of the first convoy leaving West Australia. Book is internally excellent. Covers, with colour art troopship to front, are protected with heavy clear plastic sheet. small library stamp top pages as closed.
