It is much more than a compendium of religious proverbs (though it does offer 2,448 proverbs in translation with Chinese characters given). It includes a wealth of information about Chinese religion - ancient nature worship, animism, heaven, magic, Buddhism, the pantheon, temple life, rewards and punishments, fate, the afterlife, etc. Also includes 41 b/w illustrations.
