The expedition's artist William Heine, is depicted in the middle picture. Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, the serene bucolic scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist.

At the time of Perry's visit in May 1853, the King was too young (12 years old) to receive the Perry party they met with the Regent, "a venerable old man". ("Narrative").

Stately view by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." recording a diplomatic moment with far-reaching consequences. Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.

Striking group portrait of a temple priest and monks from Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.

Heine's sensitive and tranquil views for the "Narrative" belied the tough, gunboat diplomacy at play in Perry's mission to Japan.
