Embellished with Portraits of Stockwell, Bendigo, Cabin Boy, Donovan, Kendal, Orme, Ormonde and St. Simon Green cloth with gilt lettering, gilt border and standing horse decoration on the front in gilt. lxxix, 216 pages, illustrated with eight plates, with tissue guards, except the frontispiece which is missing its tissue guard. 6.5 X 10 inches. Corners a bit pushed in covers slightly marked, owners name and date on the half title page in ink. Very good.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Dark green cloth-covered boards with decorative gilt stamping of a horse on front cover, and gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Beveled boards. Fore edge foxed. Front and rear gutters cracked through; but binding is secure and holding steady. Light pencil marks on half-title page and opposite page that read 13 plates . Black-and-white frontispiece with tissue-guard of a figure on horseback, titled Isinglass: By the kind permission of H. McCalmount Esq. M. P. From Mon s Emile Adams Picture in the Gallery at Cheveley Park New Market. . No printed publication date, but stated fourth edition. Divided into individually paginated sections i. e. Horse pedigrees, sires, and very detailed indexes. Interiors are clean and unmarked. Overall, a fair readable copy.

"Mr. Joseph Osborne, who wrote as "Beacon" in Bell's Life in London won the Grand National with Ab-del-Kader in 1851 and all his life he has taken an absorbing interest in the breeding of the thoroughbred. He writes of horses as far back as Harkaway (his pet horse) from personal knowledge of them. Mr. Osborne is an admitted authority on his subject, and although the figure-system school votes him out of date, all he writes is worth reading. There are some beautiful plates of well-known horses in the book, and extended pedigrees of nearly every prominent horse at the stud in England. The Horse-breeders' Handbook is very cheap at a guinea.".
