Motely was an historian and diplomat. He was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Minister to Austria during the Civil War and then by Grant to serve as Minister to Great Britain. The sets were published at various times in a range of bindings from expensive limited editions to more pedestrian affordable sets like this one. Each volume is untrimmed pages at the side trimmed and gold-gilded at the top. The volumes are tights and clean with scuffing in areas on the covers. No international shipping.
