Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is Volume 1, only, of "The Life of Richard Cobden" by John Morley. It's the 1908 edition, published by Macmillan and Company in their Eversley Series. Spine faded, else a nice clean copy with solid binding and no marking, marginalia or writing on the interior. Clean text paper. ************************************* Richard Cobden (1804 - 1865) was an English economist and liberal politician during the Industrial Revolution. He was called "The Apostle of Free Trade". Cobden is remembered as being a prominent member of The Anti-Corn-Law League. His opposition to the Crimean War led to public unpopularity, although he seems to have had considerable influence on Sir Robert Peel. He supported the North during the American Civil War. This Volume One is a book of incredible detail, and Morley's account is admiringly defensive of Cobden's political positions. The books final chapter concerns elections in West Riding, etc. , and touching on the Revolution of 1848. ************************************** SERIES : The Eversley Edition TITLE : The Life of Richard Cobden (Volume 1 only) AUTHOR : John Morley (John Morley, First Viscount Morley of Blackburn, 1838 - 1923) IMPRINT : Macmillan and Company PLACE : London DATE : 1908 EDITION : Reprint STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Vol. 1 only.
