Soft Cover/Stapled. Condition: COLLECTIBLE - NEW. First Edition, First Thus. Text/NEW & Bright. Softcover/Fine. English verse translation of Moliere's 5-Act play, Las Femmes Savantes (1672) by poet & literary translator Richard Purdy Wilbur (1921 - 2017). Wilbur was the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1987, and twice received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (1957 & 1989). The play, staged in a livingroom of an upper-bourgeois house in 17th century Paris. Philamente, the mother, being most unliterary is intent on having a high toned literary salon. Also short on common sense, she is an easy prey for con artist Trissotin who passes himself off as a famous poet, and manages to become a permanent house guest. Philamente hopes to marry her daughter to Trissotin, but, the daughter wishes to marry the unsuitable Clitandre. This version does stray from a strictly literal translation of Moliere's play, but is a delight. A satire on everyday life, is set in a livingroom of an upper-bourgeois house in 17th century Paris. 82 pgs. The course of true love does not run smooth, but ultimately reigns.
