Hardcover. First Ed, but unstated. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM READ WOODFIELD. First Ed, unstated. Very good/Very good. Book shows light wear at edges; lightly yellowed. Dustwrapper shows light chipping at spine; light wear at extemeties; mylar protected. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 321pp. Hardback with DJ. Chessman's story isn't as "famous" as the Hauptman case, but it continues to amaze me that anyone, as recently as 1960, could actually be executed for "perverted sex crimes" where a conviction was based on severely questionable testimony, a judge's obvious bias, and a police department's determination to "get" their man. Nonetheless, I would recommend Ninth Life to staunch death penalty supporters who insist that the system "works", whatever THAT means, and to anyone who needs to wake up to the travesties of justice that take place in our modern-day society. A good read and even more, an excellent topic for intelligent discussion and debate. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First Edition First Printing. Impeccable research by a magazine reporter & writer takes you behind the headlines into the life & crimes--both alleged & proven--of Caryl Chessman, who was executed after a 12-year prison stay at San Quentin for being the "Red Light Bandit," a robber/serial rapist/kidnapper who preyed on couples in cars in & around Los Angeles, CA, in the 1940s. His execution paved the way for the movement to abolish the death penalty in that state. This scarce title painstakingly reexamines the case & comes to "shocking conclusions" about the crime, the state, the press, the police, & the courts. In 321 pages + 16 pages of black-and-white photos. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1961, this hHardcove 8vo is in Fine condition: exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages slightly off white but completely unmarked. Former owner's stamp inside front cover. The unclipped DJ is VG+, with very minor edgewear & rubbing to extremities; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
