Quarto. Each volume contains 380 pages and is profusely illustrated. One volume with 116 full color plates and 117 plates in black and white, (some folding), the other volume contains 119 full color plates and 125 in black and white (some folding. The first volume traces the important rebellion of the early impressionists who in 1874 decided to offer their work directly to the public without the staid rules of the Salon (which wanted to maintain the standards of the past). The core of these artists included Pissaro, Degas, Sisley, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir and was followed by increased abstraction of the post-impressionists including Redon, Gaugin, Matisse, Braque, Bonnard, and eventually Van Gogh. Both volumes are in fine condition bound in black paper covered boards lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, in their original color pictorial dust jackets and housed in the original slipcase which has wear to one corner. An exceptionally nice set.
