Otherwise clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Inner hinges are sound. No owner's name or bookplate. No printing or edition statement. Photo illustrated throughout. The fascinating autobiography of Sir Harry Hamilton Johnston (1858-1927), British naturalist and African explorer. Among other exploits, this book recounts Johnston's discovery of the Okapi, a creature that looks like a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. It was 1901 when Johnston became the first European to prove the animal's existence. Today they can now be found in zoos around the world, but for centuries Okapi had been the stuff of legend. Johnston credits Philip Gosse for first putting him on the track of the Okapi -- in a volume that discusses the possibility of a large hoofed "unicorn" in Equatorial Central Africa. When Britain annexed in 1891 what was called the Nyassaland territory (now Malawi), Johnston was the named first high commissioner. He used Royal Navy gunboats to wipe out the Arab slavers. Original maroon cloth, with gilt spine titles and a facsimile of Johnston's signature on the front. Includes a 3-page appendix listing the many books written by Sir Harry Johnston.
