The district now known as St. Helier's Bay or St. Heliers has no clearly defined boundaries but may be said to comprise the original farm allotments 22 to 27, a portion of 21 and the greater part of 11 and 12. In present day terms the boundaries can be estimated roughly thus: On the east by a line running from the sea through Waitara Road and then south along Maskell Street for about two thirds of its length; then south down Sierra Street and then continuing south east of St. Heliers Bay Road and around to the junction of St. John's Road and St. Heliers Bay Road. The western boundary is more easily defined: From the sea along Aumoe Avenue and continuing in a straight line east of, and parallel to, Allum Street; then along William Fraser Crescent and up to the intersection of St. John's and St. Heliers Bay Roads. Accounts differ as to what the Maoris called the region. According to some sources "all that more or less crescent shaped sweep which is now St. Helier's Beach" was called "Whanganui" meaning "Big Bay"; but early settlers who were able to converse with the natives of Orakei maintained that this name was applied to the long sweep of coastline between Achilles and Bastion Points.
