Condition: Very good. 8vo (8" x 6 3/4"); [2], [50], [2] leaves; blind-stamped brown cloth over board, gilt-stamped center lozenge with a rondel of leaves surrounding the work "Album"; yellow endpapers and 2 yellow fly-leaves front and rear; 10 engraved plates interleaved with 40 colored paper leaves of pink, blue, and yellow; boards lightly faded, fraying to head of spine, lightly shaken; very good. A very pretty unused Album in the popular mid-19th century style. Ten engraved illustrated plates are interleaved with blank pages for friends to write sentiments. The plates are titled "At Mama's Toilet," picturing a young girl in a dressing gown powdering her face; "Letting in the New Year" pictures a large home in the woods with four men standing outside the door; "The First Pants" illustrates a mother dressing a young boy in a pair of short pants with a dog watching and wagging its tail; "At the Preserves" pictures a young girl eating jam from her finger; "Caught in the Snow" is a picture of two finely dressed women walking in the snow near a meadow, a small dog running at their feet; Two Little Monkeys" pictures an organ girl and her monkey; and "The Kittens" pictures two white kittens playing in a pile of cut flowers. The Illman Brothers, an engraving and printing firm in New York City, produced finely done steel plate engravings in the mid-19th century.

Half Cloth. Marbled Boards. Condition: Very Good. Oblong, 24 by 29.5 cm. The album was assembled from the hand-colored folding plates that appeared in each issue. Each shows five attractive young women decked in the latest fashion, usually engaged in an activity that the actual counterpart might have done, with occasionally men and/or children worked into the background or the activity. We see the women in an opera box, skating, making morning calls, promenading, at a garden party, playing croquet, at a wedding, at the seashore, gazing at engravings, etc. The compilation of these fashion plates makes for a very different experience from simply viewing them singly in the original magazine. The leaves are slightly browned but overall clean. Light to moderate wear to the binding.
