Book
Paperback. Condition: Good. Former synagogue library copy with usual library markings. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. This volume tells the story of Jewish music from its early appearance as Semitic-Oriental song to its modern manifestations, East and West. The author understands Jewish music to be a "tonal expression of Judaism, reflecting the spiritual life, ideals, and emotions of the Jewish people." As a historian of music, Idelsohn detects the original elements of that music and records the, influence exerted by the musical features of the environment upon Jewish music. With immense scholarly acumen, yet in a fluent presentation the lay reader can easily enjoy, the author discusses the religious and secular music in the biblical and early post-biblical eras, the Synagogue music after the destruction of the Second Temple, the Sephardic and the Ashkenazic musical development in the following period, the folk song of the Oriental, European, and especially the Hasidlc Jews, the rise and development of the chazzan (cantor) from ancient times to the eighteenth century, the attitude of the Reform movement to liturgic music, and the Synagogue song in the United States. Appended is a chapter on the Jew in general music. The work, properly illustrated by musical annotations, is intended for both the musician and the interested lay reader. Abraham Zevi Idelsohn (1882-1938) was Professor of Jewish Music and Liturgy at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati. 535 pages.
