About this Item: Bantam, New York, New York, 1979. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Bob Correa (illustrator). 1st Edition. This paperback is from a private WW2 book collection. It is in very good condition with just a few bumps at the edges of the cover. Front illustration like new. Interior pages are clean, crisp and unmarked. Some yellowing from aging as is normal. Photos gladly provided upon request. This is one of the best inspirational books I have ever read. It chronicles the 1,200 mile trek of a 19 year old Chindit junior officer in a deep penetration operation (Operation Longcloth) behind the Japanese lines in the Burma WW2 1943-44 offensives. It is an amazing and soul lifting recount, well written, and graphic in its detail. Later published asIan MacHorton's "Safer Than a Known Way: One Man's Epic Struggle Against Japanese and Jungle" in 1975. Seller Inventory # 000262

Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. SYNOPSIS: Ian MacHorton, a young officer in the first long-range penetration raid of Wingate's Chindits into Japanese-dominated Burma, was wounded in the leg and left to die in the jungle or surrender to the Japanese. He decided to walk to the Allied lines. Starving, wounded again and taken prisoner, raving, involved in violent jungle fighting, and embarking on perilous river crossings in leaky boats under fire, he somehow survived and reached India. - and - The first long-range penetration of Wingate's Chindits into Japanese-dominated Burma in 1943 is, in itself, a story of incredible fortitude, courage and determination. Ian MacHorton, as a young officer in that raid, faced every privation that that most vicious of campaigns could offer. Wounded in the leg, and so left to die or surrender to the Japanese, he decided to confront the horrors of hundreds of miles of jungle and walk to the Allied lines. Starving, at times raving, taken prisoner, engaged in bitter jungle fighting whenever the Japanese encountered him and other British stragglers, he survived all and finally reached the safety of India.
