Leather. Condition: Fair. Not Stated (illustrator). A late Georgian exegesis of scriptural history, illustrated with many attractive plates of engravings, in a personalised binding. This is two volumes bound as one. Volumes one has an engraved half title and title page. Volume two, however, is lacking both. The subtitle of the work is 'for the improvement of youth'. As such it belongs to an extensive corpus of 19th century moralising pedagogical literature. In this case the 'history' contained with in the scriptures is explained in plain and accessible language. As another concession to its young audience, the book is full of engraved plates illustrating the myths, which are of a high quality. The binding is personalised, bearing the legend 'W&M. Elvy 1826' in gilt to the front board. In tree calf. Externally a little worn with significant damage to the spine. A central strip of the leather has been lost from the centre of the spine, along with smaller sections from the head and tail. The titles to the spine are affected. The front joint has started and is close to failure. The rear joint is attached by cords only. With contemporary ink inscriptions to the front free endpaper. Internally, age-toned towards the edges, and with light foxing here and there. The binding is loosening in places. Fair. book.
