First Edition
Vg . no dj. 1st edition. green covers are generally clean and bright, with some isolated tarnish marks, and with clear gilt titling to spine. sharp-cornered. internally, the first and rear endpapers shows a large brown shadow of a former insert ( bookmark?), and some isolated foxing. there is more foxing and tarnish marks to the next endpapers, and markedly to title and pre-title page with its tissue-guarded image. the rest of the text itself is free of blemish and is clean, bright and tightly bound in. no inscriptions or marginalia. It is well known that, between 1750 and 1790, a group of remarkable women emulated in London the example given them in Paris by Mmes du Tencin, du Deffand, and Geoffrin, and instituted assemblies, whence card-playing was excluded for the sake of literary conversation. Among these ladies, familiarly nicknamed 'Blue Stockings' the leading spirit undoubtedly was Mrs. Montague, the subject of this Essay. This little book is not intended as a Biography, which Mrs. Climenson alone can satisfactorily write, with the help of the mass of unprinted correspondence in her possession. Our scope is narrower. From the tanglerd biographical details contained in the printed volumes, we have tried to disxcover and collect, as best we could, the half-obscured and scattered lineaments of Mrs. Montague's intellectual and moral character.
