Tipped to verso of first free end page is hand written and signed letter by Josephine Lazarus postmarked May 13, 1909. Letter is addressed to Jacob H. Berkowitz, Esq, 85 East 10th Street, City, the previous owner. Letter refers to writing essay Freedom. Tipped to verso of last rear free end page is a typed letter signed by Charles P. Howland dated December 6, 1910 to Jacob H. Berkowitz, Esq. Letter states Charles P. Howland is sending under a separate cover a copy of Miss Lazarus' essays. Tipped to recto of second free end page is a short hand written note in hand of JHB (Jacob H. Berkowitz) stating that Charles P. Howland married a niece of Miss Josephine. That document also contains the signature of Charles P. Howland. Word Posthumous in pencil on half title page. Title page states Privately Printed. Fourteen-line poem dated October, 1890 by Caroline Hazard follows title page. Introduction written by Charles P. Howland. Additional check marks in pencil in margin of 5 pages including a short underlines in pencil on page 72. Josephine Lazarus, March 23 1846-February 4, 1910.
