Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (1809 on title page of both volumes, Tomus Primus and Tomus Secundus, NAP). In Latin (right side of the pages) and Greek (left side). 'Exhibens Textum Graecum Cum Variant-Bus Lectionibus Editionis Manualis Griesbachianae et Versionem Latinam Interpretationum Diversitate Instructa.' ' 'Novum Testamentum Graecum Erecensione Griesbachii, Nova Versione Latina Illustratum.' You can see the covers in the photos provided. There is rubbing on both sides of the spine, particularly with the first tome which also has a tear off both sides of the bottom edge of the spine. The spots of color loss that you can see on the front and rear covers are smooth. The edges have rubbing and some rub-through. The corners have rub-through. The page edges on both volumes are pretty clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is present. You need to find the right angle to read it. It says 'Schott Novum Testamentum on the tan or gold band near the top and Tome I (and II) on the second band from the bottom. Tome II is very solidly bound from cover to cover. The covers are bound tightly and the pages are bound tightly. The front cover of Tome I is bound tightly to the blank first end paper and title page that follows it. However, they are pulled away from the rest of the text (I've provided a photo). The rest of the text, basically the entirety of it, is quite solidly bound all the way through to the rear cover which is also very solidly bound, no cracks or spaces. The pages have no binding issues at all. That includes the first one after the title page (which you can see in the photo) and the early ones that follow it. The title page is tightly bound to the first end paper, but does have some vertical creasing. I never tried to learn how to repair books, but this looks like it would be a pretty easy repair because the issue is a limited one, the spine needs to be glued back onto the textblock. The condition of the pages in Tome I is very good. There is some foxing, but it is very light. A previous owner did some very light pencil underlining over the first 25 to 30% of the pages, however only on the left side, the Greek side. He or she also penciled occasionally in the left margin with very tiny letters. I didn't notice any underlining after page 112. There are only a handful of pencilings in the margin after that page. There are 399 pages in Tome I. I turned over all the pages in Tome II. The underlining appears to have ended with Tome I. There may be something very light that I'm missing, but if so very little. I found a total of 12 pages that had a bit of penciling in the blank left margin. Two instances had a penned reference in the margin of a page on the right-hand side. So, there's a minimum of writing in Tome II, which is quite long, 563 pages. I would describe the foxing in Tome II as quite light, though somewhat more than in Tome I. These assessments are obviously subjective. There is one tiny stain on the middle page edge of Tome II and it just peeks over the edge of a dozen pages. The pages in both tomes are in very nice shape. Corner creases are at a minimum. The pages have a fairly supple feel, not stiff. There is no sense of fragility, and I spent a good deal of time handling the book and turning the pages, back and forth. Other imperfections I observed are few: a tiny triangular tear just above the page number on the last page of Tome II, also one page that is cut short off the bottom edge (the print is not reached), and really not much else. There are no names written anywhere in the book. There are no markings, stamps, etc. It looks as if there were two small attachments off the top edge of the front inside covers of both tomes, one is pink. Someone at some point tried to remove them, but succeeded it only removing part of them. The second tome also has a short red line on it. There are no attachments or residue of attachments to be found on either of the rear inside covers. That pretty much covers condition.
