Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Stated First Edition. Before Robert Heinlein's death in 1988 he had expressed a desire to have a selection of his letters published after he was gone, entitled Grumbles from the Grave. However, because of illness he was not able to edit this work. So after his death, his wife Virginia has taken the job of fulfilling his last wish. The book contains 267 indexed pages, followed by a Bibliography of his writings, in the order of their publication. It begins with a short biography with photos, followed by letters to his editors, markets, and etc beginning in 1939. There are three appendixes; Appendix A is Cuts to Red Planet, which are cuts he had to make to satisfy the editor. Appendix B is Postlude to Podkayne of Mars--Original Version. The editor did not like Heinlein's ending so his revised ending cuts Podkayne. Appendix C is Heinlein Retrospective October 6, 1988 and describes his receiving the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. The condition is new and is stamped New on the ffl.

"Heinlein became one of the first American science-fiction writers to break into mainstream magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940s. He was one of the best-selling science-fiction novelists for many decades, and he, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke are often considered the "Big Three" of English-language science fiction authors. Notable Heinlein works include Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers (which helped mould the space marine and mecha archetypes) and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. His work sometimes had controversial aspects, such as plural marriage in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, militarism in Starship Troopers and technologically competent women characters that were strong and independent, yet often stereotypically feminine such as Friday.
