Cloth. Condition: Good. Unamed (illustrator). A work on the Southern regions of Australia, illustrated with photographs throughout. A interesting piece of travel writing from the late 19th century. Offering a history on the founding of Australia, its railways, laws, local government, immigration, education, industry and much more. Unfortunately this work is missing numerous plates throughout, which appear to be the illustrative maps. Most likely removed by a previous owner. Despite this the work is still an interesting work of Australian history. Numerous illustrated plates remain, with a folding plate towards the rear of the volume. 34 plates missing in total. The work was edited by the Congregational minister William Harcus. Emigrating to Australia in 1860, he turned his hand to journalism and was appointed the lead writer for South Australian Register. He continued his ministerial and journalist work throughout his life. Collated, incomplete. In the original cloth binding. Externally smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the joints and to the extremities, resulting in a small amount of loss to the cloth. The odd mark to the front and rear boards. Front and rear joints are starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. A few pages are detached, caused by plate removal rather than the binding, though it is strained in places. Pages are very lightly agetoned. Numerous plates are detached. Overall condition of the work is affected by the lacking plates. Good. book.

HARDCOVER. 1876. First edition. A very good copy bound in brown cloth board with gilt lettering and black decoration to the spine and front board. The boards are lightly edge rubbed and flecked but are in generally very good condition. The edges of the endpapers are age tanned and there is a previous owners name to the first blank page and to the bottom edge of the text block. The rear map pocket has a map of Australia which appears to be a facsimile. The contents of the book are in fine, unmarked condition and the bindings are very good with only very slight weakening to the hinges. A really lovely piece of South Australian history. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo., xvi, 432 pages, 2 large folding maps, (a general map of Australia and a large folding map of South Australia) (1 in pocket at rear), numerous b/w illustrations, original cloth gilt, slightly rubbed at extremities, generally a VG+ clean tightly bound copy. South Australia: Its History, Resources and Productions, was edited and largely written by William Harcus in 1876 treating the social, political, and industrial aspects of the colony. The book was published by authority of the Government of South Australia, with, like several similar books of this period, the hope that it would inform people 'back home' in England of the prosperity of the colony and encourage people to migrate. It is full of detailed information of the colony on South Australia, including chapters on founders, pioneers, colonial development, government, land, mining, railways, infrastructure, industries, religion, education and exploration, as well as containing additional chapters relating to the Northern Territory and Central Australia (which was part of South Australia at the time). Detailed sections are also included on flora, fauna, statistics, geology and mines written by various experts in the field. Containing a great deal of useful information, and some fantastic maps - this is a book for historians of South Australia's history.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. London, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1876. Octavo, xvi, 432 pages plus 66 engraved plates, a folding table, a folding full-colour map of Australia (320 × 400 mm), and a large folding map of South Australia (795 × 545 mm, with minimal colour) in an endpocket. Cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities, with the rear top corner a little bumped; edges slightly marked or darkened; front free endpaper slightly cracked near the head of the hinge, with a small piece snipped from the top corner; tiny splits at a few intersecting folds in the map; minimal signs of age and use; an excellent copy. An undervalued work: the plates (wood engravings from photographs) are a major pictorial record, and there are two supplementary chapters on the Northern Territory and Central Australia. 'In the chapter on the Northern Territory, I have incorporated some useful papers written by residents there, and prepared for publication by Mr J.G. Knight'. The chapter on Central Australia is even more important: 'Since the foregoing was in type, the following interesting and well-written account of Central Australia, along the line of telegraph, has appeared in the "Register". The writer, Mr J.A. Giles, is well acquainted with the whole of the country which he describes. It is the best and most trust-worthy account of Central Australia which has yet been published'. The entire chapter is devoted to the article, which refers on occasion (and thus eliminates any misattribution) to Alfred Giles, the explorer with strong telegraph line credentials. Ferguson 10233 (not recording the maps).
