Alfred Edward Peache, who arrived in NZ from Great Britain in 1875 aged 22, was grandfather of the author, although she never knew him, being born shortly before he died in 1906. Working from his three journals and 15 letter books she compiled this excellent account of his life in NZ. Although his trip was planned only as visit to an uncle, Percy Cox of Mount Somers run inland from Ashburton, AEP soon took over management of the 12,000 acre sheep station, developing Mount Somers into a successful and important sheep station. His versatility, mechanical inventiveness and strong viewpoints come through in this fine reconstruction of life on a high country station in late Victorian times. First edition of 1970. 211 pages, 23 b/w illustrations, mainly photos,some art, including portraits. Blue hard cover with gilt spine titles VG+ with tiny fade lower front edge, very small three initial stamp lower corner FFEP, no other inscriptions, text block excellent. Blue DJ with EAP portrait to rear is VG with light surface wear few chips. A scace book, with newspaper clipping of historical feature on Mount Somers loosely enclosed.
