Prima edizione, stampata l'anno primo della Libertà per riabilitare la figura del cittadino di merito Gratarol che, accusato di libertinismo da Carlo Gozzi (che intese vendicarsi della relazione amorosa de Gratarol con la sua musa, Teodora Ricci), dovette riparare in esilio da Venezia, denunciando da lì con la precedente Narrazione Apologetica gli intrighi del Consiglio dei Dieci e l'ingiustizia del fisco nei confronti della sua famiglia. Il caso del segretario del Senato veneziano ingiustamente perseguitato fece clamore, permettendo al protagonista di uscire allo scoperto con una propria accorata autodifesa, la Narrazione apologetica di Pietro Antonio Gratarol nobile padovano, pubblicata a Stoccolma (dove si era trasferito dal marzo 1778) nel 1779, presso H. Fougt, cavaliere del Real Ordine Wasa. L'opera, in seicento esemplari tutti donati dall'autore, ebbe subito uno straordinario successo di pubblico e a nulla valsero i tentativi della Serenissima di frenarne la diffusione: il libro, anche in una ristampa apparsa nel 1781 con titolo identico, senza luogo di pubblicazione e in copie manoscritte clandestine, dilagò per anni nei territori veneziani, come riferirono agli inquisitori di Stato i confidenti Giacomo Casanova (dicembre 1781) e Girolamo Lioni (ottobre 1785). Il G. denunciava senza mezzi termini l'esistenza a Venezia di uno Stato nello Stato, la concentrazione del potere decisionale nella mani d'una ristretta schiera di patrizi che, di fatto, manipolava le deliberazioni dei più importanti organi sovrani, quali il Senato e il Consiglio dei dieci. A queste macchinazioni di palazzo, cancro radicato che minava dall'interno lo Stato veneziano, il G. attribuiva totalmente la responsabilità della sua condanna. Alla Narrazione, non priva di qualche valore letterario, in cui l'analisi politica si mescola ad aspetti romanzeschi e romanzati (come evidenziato in Capaci, 1997), fecero da contrappunto le astiose Riflessioni d'un imparziale sopra la Narrazione apologetica di P.A. Gratarol (Milano 1779), di un anonimo che il G. definì un frate, cioè di quelli Fratacci veramente Frati (il testo probabilmente era solo un'operazione commerciale ispirata dalla risonanza della Narrazione), una Lettera confutatoria del Gozzi (1780) e le Memorie inutili della vita di Carlo Gozzi scritte da lui medesimo e pubblicate per umiltà, edite a Venezia nel 1797 ma scritte, secondo lo stesso Gozzi, nel 1780 (nel volume III vi furono ristampati Le droghe d'amore e la Lettera confutatoria). Condition: Very Good. 2 volumi in 1 in-8° (cm. 19,5), legatura di poco successiva in m. tela con titolo in oro al dorso e piatti marmorizzati, tagli spruzzati; pp. VI 228, 214 in buono stato (qualche sporadica fioritura) con 1 tavola di ritratto in antiporta. Noto libro del Gratarol che aveva l'obiettivo di salvare la sua reputazione dopo l'accusa di libertinaggio e la fuga da Venezia a Stoccolma, dove elaborò questa narrazione contro il governo della Serenissima, denunciandone intrighi e corruzione. Contiene a c. L1r, con proprio occhietto: "Riflessioni d'un imparziale sopra la narrazione apologetica di Pietro Antonio Gratarol nobile". Bella legatura coeva in cartoncino picchettato. Tagli di giallo. Ottimo esemplare. Il Gratarol, segretario del senato veneto, divenuto amante di Caterina Dolfin-Tron, all'epoca musa ispiratrice dei lavori letterari di Carlo Gozzi, fu messo alla berlina da quest'ultimo come libertino. Per salvare la sua reputazione fu costretto a fuggire da Venezia e a rifugiarsi a Stoccolma, dove scrisse questa narrazione contro il geverno veneto, denunciandone intrighi e corruzione. Condannato in contumacia, visse a Stoccolma, poi in Inghilterra, quindi a Lisbona, negli Stati Uniti e in Brasile. Morì durante un viaggio verso il Madagascar. Gratarol (1730-1785), nobile veneziano e Segretario di Stato, era stato messo alla berlina sul palcoscenico da Carlo Gozzi per un illecito affare nel suo Le droghe d'amore, sfociato in un pubblico scandalo, in realtà perché amante di Caterina Dolfin-Tron, già musa di Carlo Gozzi. A seguito di ciò, Gratarol cadde in disgrazia, lasciò Venezia senza autorizzazione, e dovette fuggire a Stoccolma, dove pubblicò questa difesa, la sua 'Narrazione Apologetica' contro il governo di Venezia, denunciando intrighi e corruzione. Del suo caso andava interessandosi anche la stampa internazionale. Il caso del segretario del Senato veneziano ingiustamente perseguitato fece clamore, permettendo al protagonista di uscire allo scoperto con una propria accorata autodifesa. Il Cicogna in Saggio di bibliografia veneziana, p.436 n.3211, e in De Tipaldo, Biografia degli italiani illustri, v.2 p. 220, dichiara questa edizione come 'edizione forestiera' in quanto il Gratarol si trovava in Inghilterra dove era riparato dopo la fuga a Stoccolma. A p.176 della lettera, pero, l'A. si dichiara soddisfatto che la nuova edizione dell'opera sia stampata in Italia dopo la 1. ed. di Stoccolma. Da c. Z1r, con proprio occhietto: Riflessioni d'un imparziale sopra la narrazione L'autore delle Riflessioni e anonimo, cfr. Melzi, v.2, p. 22. Pier Antonio Gratarol (Venezia 1730 - Madagascar 1785) era stato a lungo Impiegato della cancelleria ducale, e dal 1764 ricoprì l'importante carica di segretario del Senato della Repubblica. Cadde in disgrazia e dovette fuggire a Stoccolma, ove pubblicò per la prima volta la Narrazione apologetica (1779), descrivendo la corruzione e gli intrighi dominanti nel Consiglio dei Dieci. Condannato in contumacia, spogliato dei suoi beni, fu poi in Inghilterra, in Portogallo, nell'America Settentrionale, in Brasile e infine nel Madagascar, dove morì. Nemico dichiarato di Carlo Gozzi, sembra dover alla satira nei suoi confronti nella commedia "Le droghe d'amore" la causa della sua fuga. Alcuni studiosi ritengono oggi tuttavia che l'alterco con Gozzi fu semplicemente un pretesto, e che Gratarol avesse nemici ben più potenti, da identificare in Caterina Dolfin e soprattutto in Andrea Tron. Non sono da escludere inoltre collegamenti del Gratarol con la massoneria (in particolare di rito scozzese). 18mo secolo.

Inimicatosi con l'amante Caterina Dolfin Tron e con Carlo Gozzi che lo aveva messo alla berlina come libertino, costretto a fuggire da Venezia, Gratarol, pubblicò a Stoccolma questa narrazione contro il governo veneto di cui, con un misto di esagerazioni e verità, descrisse la corruzione e l'intrigo dominanti perfino nel consiglio dei Dieci. Condannato in contumacia, visse a Stoccolma, poi in Inghilterra - ove godette della protezione di Lord Morton Pitt - quindi a Lisbona, negli Stati Uniti e in Brasile. Morì durante un viaggio verso il Madagascar con l'avventuriero M.A. Beniowsky ed il conte e la contessa Adelsheim. Libro rarissimo (la maggior parte della prima edizione di Stoccolma e stata distrutta per ordine della Repubblica Veneta). Ad alta curiosità il suo avviso (inserito nell'ultima pagina del secondo volume) ai suoi creditori, giustificandosi per l'avvenuta confisca dei suoi beni, possono andare a riscuotere il loro saldo più gli interessi maturati dal Procuratore Pier Francesco Tini, negoziante in Genova.
