Charlotte Godley left England for New Zealand late in 1849, with her husband John Robert Godley, a prominant member of the Canterbury Association, which arranged for settlers to come Canterbury in the South Island. These detailed letters to her mother in England, from 1850 to 1853, provide an important historical record of what the earliest settlers found, how they coped with problems. adversity, primative conditions and some hardship as they created the foundations of what was to become a major city, an economic and agricultural powerhouse of early NZ. Her letters were first printed for private circulation in 1936 and reprinted, edited by John R Godley, with his notes, for public release to mark the Canterbury Centennial year in 1951. 387 pages including appendix and index. b/w frontis art portrait, nine b/w art plates, two photos, map and family tree. Yellow hard covers are VG with light fading to front across top and on vertical edge, light, finger smudges to back board, spine titles in dark red, ink gift inscription/date top FFEP, internallyt otherwise excellent, clean and tight.
