Published to mark the centennial of the South Canterbury settlement's foundation in January 1859, when the first immigrants brought directly from Britain by the full-rigged ship Strathallan were landed at Timaru. The 24 chapters of "South Canterbury" begin with brief account of the geography and natural characteristics of the South Canterbury region and its pre-European Maori history. Subsequent chapters include the whaling era, exploring the hinterland, developing agriculture and commerce, the growth and development of the major town and port at Timaru, the provision of communications, infrastructure, government and civic facilities, political issuse, education and community activities. The penultimate chapter examines the mountainous Mt Cook/Southern Alpine area lying at South Canterbury's western boundary, with sport covered in the last. That the author left no stone unturned to build a comprehensive history the region is evident, with the main text section of this massive book running to 437 pages, followed by a bibliography, 12 appendices, errata page and a detailed index, taking the total pagination to 507. It is no exaggeration to say that this volume "has it all." First edition of 1958 from the South Canterbury Centennial History Committee, just over 500 pages, The illustrations list notes just over 300 b/w images (on glossy plates) mostly photos with some art and portraits, there are six line drawings including the frontis of the first ship Strathallan, front endpapers carry a map of the South Canterbury area in 1958, tipped in on the RFEP is a South Canterbury map dated 1867, eight other maps/plans. Blue hard covers are VG, lightly faded, the spine strip with silver titles is more heavily sunned with the cloth covering worn through, with handling, at the rear hinge, the rear board is loose but well attached with the gutter cracked at the RFEP/rear pastedown junction. Internally the text block is excellent. There are no inscriptions etc. (Note: Loosely enclosed in this copy is a 12 page booklet containing "corrections and additions" to the book, including to the page numbers of the illustrations, the captions and to the main text. The booklet was printed in mid-1961. The author died in December 1960.).

This editioin of the prolific series of NZ WWII official war histories mainly covers the deployment of Army units to various locations in the Pacific theatre, including the post-surrender despatch of the J-Force occupation detachment in Japan, brief coverage of RNZN and RNZAF particpaition in campaigning, the establishment and work of coastwatcing stations and Fijian troop commitments. Each of the South Pacifuc areas in which NZ trrops campaigned is well covered here, while the military situation in the Pacific prior to the Japanese attacks is traversed. The introductory section also reviews the establishment of NZ 3rd Divisioin for Pacific service as well as supply and logistics issues. "The Pacific" follows the pattern and high standard of the other official campaign histories published post-WWII. First edition published by the War History Branch, Internal Affairs Department, in 1952, 395 pages including 12 appendices and index. illustrated with b/w photo frontis, with 60+ further b/w photos in eight collations, three fold-out maps and six in-text maps. Original red hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions. Heavy book which could require addititional postage for international delivery.
