Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 212 pages. Dj worn. Slipcase worn and rubbed along edgesA.H & A. W. Reed [Published date: 1980].[From front jacket flap] IN 17 69 Cook's Endeavour was off Tolaga Bay on the east coast of New Z ealand's North Island. Here Sydney Parkinson, an English painter e ngaged by Banks to record botanical discoveries, made a pen-and-w ash study of A Perforated Rock. This work is the starting-point of Gil Docking's zoo-year survey of New Zealand painting, which con cludes with Brent Wong's Abandoned Settlement (1969), a title tha t is itself a silent commentary on the two centuries that separat e it from Parkinson's sketch.Gil Docking, Director of the Aucklan d City Art Gallery, divides his subject into four main periods be ginning with that of Exploration, during which British and French painters of varying degrees of ability recorded what they saw du ring brief visits. The Settlement period follows, beginning withAu gustus Earle (1793-1838) and ending with J.B. C. Hoyte (1835-1913 ), during which NewZealand's leading painters were, to a man, Eur opean-born and seeing the country as a new and quite unfamiliar l and.The period of Transition covers the 1870s to the 1920s, and t he author opens it with W. M.Hodgkins (1855-98), who arrived in D unedin from England via Australia in 1860. This, the formative er a of New Zealand painting, ends with a study of A. W. Walsh (1859 -1916), and includes the first generation of New Zealand painters to be born and brought up in the country. The fourth period is d escribed under the head of New Impulses; it begins with Lots Whit e (b. 1903) and takes the reader up to 1969. Throughout, Mr Docki ng has selected the illustrations to complement his narrative, so that they are not merely an assemblage of period works but are i ntegrated with his text. The result is an illustrated study of su rpassing interest, not only to students of New Zealand's art hist ory and to those who appreciate fine painting, but also to those who see a nation's development in the arts as of particular impor tance to its whole social fabric.

Book
Hardback with dustjacket. New edition. This landmark book on New Zealand artists and their work was first published in 1971, extended to 1990 by art historian Michael Dunn and now again to 2010 by art historian, writer and lecturer Edward Hanfling. The original text by Gil Docking, former director of the Auckland City Art Gallery, covers the period from European discovery up until 1969, and is presented in its completely original form, making for a fascinating look at what was being thought and written about New Zealand paintings thirty-something years ago. Michael Dunn's narrative takes over to complete the picture through the 1970s and 1980s, and then Edward Hanfling looks at New Zealand painting and its evolution over the last twenty years, when many painters saw their medium as a vehicle for addressing issues or generating a range of meanings, rather than dealing with visual or formal concerns. In total, this new edition features more than 200 paintings. This book is an ideal introduction to the development of New Zealand painting from its very beginning, and also the development of critical thinking about the work of New Zealand artists over the last 40 years. Detailed bibliography and index makes this an ideal book for students.
