Cloth and boards. Condition: Very Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Fine. Mordecai Gerstein (illustrator). First Edition, First Printing. 8vo, yellow quarter cloth with red lettering on spine over black boards, illustrated throughout by the author-artist, red endpapers,130 pages with deckled edges + [2] blanks + [2] Reflections by the Author. Mordecai Gerstein (1935 - 2019) was an American artist, writer, and film director, best known for illustrating and writing more than 40 children's and YA books. He became a Caldecott winner (2004) for The Man Who Walked Between the Towers (2003), about French aerialist, Philippe Petit, which became a movie in 2005 starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The Old Country is a beautifully crafted original fairytale about shape-changing by the author. Gerstein did the evocative dust jacket cover art of a fox-over-girl in silhouette. But, frustratingly, he didn't illustrate the rest of his marvellously evocative tale! EXCEPTIONAL COPY in all respects! No markings by previous owners or remainder. Not ex library. Tight, bright, very clean copy, virtually "As New." Written right after his Caldecott win.
